How Should You Approach South Hell Alone?
A South Hell solo attempt puts the searching, navigation, and escape work on you. Learn the return route before pushing deep into the school, because carrying a key helps little when you cannot find the exit door. Work through one area at a time, listen for jingling lockers, and keep enough stamina to retreat when Cartman closes in.
The central objective is to search lockers, collect four keys, and unlock the exit. Your round can also involve boarded passages, a power outage, and a jammed door that requires crank parts. Follow the current objective text instead of assuming the escape is ready the moment you find the last key.

Open the Passage and Learn Your Return Route
If boards block the opening passage, find the crowbar and use it to remove them. Finish clearing the obstruction before heading into the school.

Before searching distant rooms:
- Locate the door where you need to use the keys.
- Read the nearby room signs and remember the route back.
- Identify a hiding locker along your route.
- Notice glass on the floor so you can avoid it during a retreat.
Use recognizable areas such as the cafeteria, theater, computer room, and showers as landmarks. These are more useful than trying to remember a string of similar dark hallways.
Retrace a short route before extending it. Getting lost with a key, a fading flashlight, and low stamina creates more problems than taking a moment to learn a junction.
Find Keys Without Searching the Same Lockers Again

Listen for jingling near lockers. Keys have an audio clue, so pause long enough to hear it rather than sprinting past every row.
Search systematically:
- Finish a row before moving into the next room.
- Leave searched lockers open to mark where you have been.
- Pick up useful supplies, including batteries and traps, while searching.
- Return to use a key before continuing a long sweep.
A locker that contains money still marks search progress, but cash does not advance the door objective. Keep moving toward unchecked areas rather than circling familiar rooms.
If you find another key while already carrying one and cannot pick it up, remember the room and nearby landmark. Use the key you have, then return for the other. Remembering “near the theater entrance” is much more useful than “somewhere across the school.”
Keep Noise Down and Preserve an Escape Route
Cartman can hear your microphone, and running and stepping on glass create noise. Avoid whistling during a quiet search, and keep unnecessary microphone noise down.

Walk while checking clear areas. Save sprinting for situations where you need distance, then recover stamina before moving into another exposed hallway. Running until the stamina bar is empty leaves you with fewer options when a chase starts.
Hiding lockers require interaction to stay hidden: follow the circle prompt once inside. Avoid entering a locker directly in front of Cartman; he can pull you out.
Check a room’s exits before searching its far corner. A dead end becomes especially dangerous when you have already spent your stamina reaching it.
Distraction items need planning, too:
- Alarm clock: Place it away from your intended route. Its activation has a delay, so set it before you need an immediate escape.
- Fried chicken: Throw it away from the path you want to take, then watch Cartman’s movement before crossing.
- Bear trap: Place it along an approaching enemy’s path while keeping your own retreat clear.
Do not stop beside a distraction waiting for it to rescue you. Use the opening to move toward a known route.
Manage Your Flashlight and Insanity
Darkness raises the insanity meter, making flashlight management part of survival. Hallucinations and visual effects can make navigation harder just when you need to recognize the route home.
Collect spare batteries during locker searches and watch for low-power warnings. Use the recharge or battery prompt displayed in your round; do not wait until you are being chased to figure out the controls.
When the power goes out, the objective directs you to the basement fuse box. Restore it rather than continuing a long search through dark corridors.
Treat frightening appearances cautiously. Hallucinations can resemble threats, but assuming the Cartman ahead is harmless can send you straight into a real chase. Keep distance and preserve a way out.
Handle the Final Door Objective Before Leaving
After using the keys, read the next prompt carefully. A jammed exit can send you back into the school to find crank parts.
When that objective appears:
- Search for the highlighted white objects on the floor.
- Check areas in a consistent order.
- Follow the objective prompts as you collect the parts.
- Return to the exit when the game announces that it is open.
Keep the return route in mind throughout this search. An open exit still requires you to reach the correct door.
Other tasks include ringing three school bells, answering a ringing phone, and finding Ike’s rubber duck. Keep those separate from the key and door objectives, and prioritize the active escape requirement when your light or stamina is running low.
If an interaction becomes stuck, use the mailbox in the lobby to report the bug. Include the room, the active objective, and what happened when you tried to interact.
