South Hell Insanity Meter: How to Handle the Darkness

What Makes Insanity Go Up?

The South Hell insanity meter makes darkness a problem even when Cartman isn't chasing you. Spending time in the dark raises it, and high insanity brings distracting scares and visual effects that make the school harder to navigate. Keep your flashlight ready so a search for keys doesn't become a desperate struggle to see the hallway.

Watch the meter alongside your flashlight charge. Saving battery by wandering through dark rooms leaves you dealing with another problem: increasingly disruptive hallucinations while you're still trying to find lockers, recognize rooms, and get back to the exit.

Use your light while searching unfamiliar areas. When the school loses power, follow the objective to fix the fuse box in the basement and restore the lights.

Keep Your Flashlight Supplied

Your flashlight has a battery, and low charge causes it to flicker. Don't wait until you're struggling to see before thinking about power.

Build these habits into your locker search:

  • Collect spare batteries. Search lockers for supplies while listening for keys.
  • Watch for flickering. Take it as your cue to handle the battery before continuing into another dark section.
  • Read the recharge prompt. Flashlight cranking and spare batteries both appear in the game; follow the control shown on your screen.
  • Recharge before heading back out. Handle your flashlight before starting another trip through the school.

Keep battery charge and insanity separate in your planning. Recharging gives you light for the next stretch; don't assume it instantly clears the visual effects already disrupting your view.

Don't Let Hallucinations Waste Your Items

High insanity can fill a run with jump scares, blurred lighting, and misleading Cartman appearances. Those distractions become especially costly when you react by spending an item meant for the real pursuer.

Fried chicken is a distraction, while bear traps can interrupt Cartman. Before using either, look at where you're going next. Throwing chicken at a frightening appearance without an escape route can leave you short on supplies when an actual chase starts.

Keep your response focused:

  • Check the hallway before committing an item. Avoid throwing supplies purely in response to a jump scare.
  • Keep moving toward a known route. Don't let a sudden appearance send you wandering into an unfamiliar room.
  • Stay cautious around Cartman. A previous hallucination doesn't make the next encounter harmless.

Sound still matters during this confusion. Cartman can hear your microphone, and broken glass creates noise. Keep your mic quiet and watch the floor instead of letting a scare pull your attention away from both. While hiding in a locker, click the circle to stay hidden.

Make Your Key Search More Direct

Getting lost stretches out your time in the school and puts more pressure on your flashlight. Learn the route between your search area and the key door before pushing farther away.

South Hell — Make Your Key Search More Direct

Listen for the jingling sound near lockers containing keys. Search nearby lockers carefully when you hear it, and leave searched lockers open to help your team recognize areas already covered.

When you collect a key, return to the door and use it. Tell teammates which section you're searching so everyone doesn't keep circling the same rooms while another hallway goes untouched.

Keep track of the basement route, too. A power outage adds darkness to a search that's already difficult; follow the fuse-box objective rather than continuing to comb through rooms with the lights out.

Once the escape objective advances, read the new prompt. A jammed door can require crank parts, so finding the keys doesn't always finish the job. Look for the highlighted white parts on the floor, and keep your flashlight ready for that final search.
