South Hell Survival Tips: Stay Alive and Escape School

Early Game: Learn Your Way Out

Finding a key means little if you get lost carrying it back. These South Hell survival tips will help you search efficiently, preserve your flashlight, and avoid drawing Cartman into your path. Learn the return route early so your next chase doesn't become a frantic tour of the school.

1. Clear the boards and memorize the return route

When boards block the starting passage, find the crowbar and remove them. Give the player using it room to work instead of shoving them away from the interaction.

Before heading deep into the school, remember the turns between the starting basement, the exit door, and the main corridors. Use room signs as landmarks. Knowing which hallway leads home becomes especially useful when the power goes out.

2. Give teammates separate search areas

Assign different rooms or corridors instead of following everyone through the same lockers. Keep callouts specific: name the room, say whether you've searched it, and announce when you're returning with a key.

Avoid crowding doorways or pushing teammates during interactions. A group that blocks its own escape route makes Cartman's job easier.

3. Follow the locker jingle

Lockers containing keys make a jingling sound. Wear headphones and pause to listen when entering a fresh search area, especially after a long stretch of empty lockers.

Search nearby lockers methodically rather than sprinting between distant rooms. Leave searched lockers open so your team can recognize covered areas. Even lockers without keys can contain money or useful supplies, including batteries and traps.

4. Return keys instead of carrying them around

Take a key back to the exit-door objective once you find one. Carrying it through another extended search makes it harder for teammates to understand what still needs collecting.

If you discover another key while already carrying one, remember the room and tell someone where it is. Before searching the entire school again for a missing key, ask whether a teammate has it in their inventory.

5. Keep your microphone and footsteps under control

Cartman can hear your microphone, and running creates noise. Keep voice callouts brief, quiet background audio, and walk while searching when you aren't being chased.

Watch the floor for broken glass, which also makes noise when stepped on. Stay away from Ike when possible; his screams add another hazard to an already noisy hallway.

Save sprinting for situations where you need distance. Burning through stamina between empty rooms can leave you struggling to escape when Cartman appears.

6. Hide before Cartman watches you enter

Don't jump into a locker directly in front of him. Being inside doesn't protect you when he sees where you went.

Follow the hiding prompt once you're concealed: the locker interaction requires clicking the circle to remain hidden. Pay attention to that interaction instead of opening your inventory or continuing a conversation.

7. Recharge before the battery becomes an emergency

Check your flashlight charge during searches and collect spare batteries along the way. Refill it during a quiet pause instead of waiting until you're fleeing through an unfamiliar corridor.

Use the recharge prompt displayed in your round. A crank interaction is available during some runs, while batteries provide another way to restore charge. Read the prompt before pressing a familiar button and accidentally consuming a battery.

8. Balance battery conservation against insanity

Darkness raises insanity, so leaving your flashlight off indefinitely carries a cost. Hallucinations and visual effects can make navigation harder just when you need a clear route.

When the power fails, head for the basement fuse box to restore it. Coordinate that job with your team rather than leaving everyone searching in darkness.

9. Place distractions away from your escape path

Alarm clocks attract Cartman when they ring. Place one away from the corridor you intend to use, and account for its delayed activation instead of expecting an immediate rescue.

Fried chicken also serves as a lure. Use distractions to create room to move, but keep an escape route ready rather than standing still to see whether Cartman takes the bait.

10. Use traps without trapping yourself in a corner

Bear traps can interrupt Cartman's pursuit. Place one along his approach while keeping space to retreat.

Avoid backing into dead-end rooms just because you have an item ready. Check the doorway and identify your next turn before committing to a search.

Final Escape: Follow the Current Objective

11. Keep extra tasks separate from the exit objective

Extra tasks include ringing three school bells, answering a ringing phone, and finding Ike's rubber duck. Handle nearby tasks while searching, but keep track of the keys still needed at the exit.

Once the objective changes, stop repeating the previous job. An instruction to reach the exit means it's time to navigate back, not keep opening lockers for money.

12. Check for a jammed door before celebrating

A door can jam and require cranking parts before the escape continues. If that objective appears, search for the highlighted white parts on the floor and divide the remaining areas among teammates.

Remember the route back while searching. Once the exit opens, head straight there instead of following another player into an unfamiliar wing.

If an interaction stops responding or a required object cannot be collected, report the problem through the lobby mailbox. Include the room and the objective that stalled so the bug report is useful.
